Burnham's first 100 days yield mixed voter reactions, according to latest poll

Andy Burnham’s approval rating amid budget pressures

Andy Burnham faces a challenging landscape as he approaches his 100th day in office, with new polling indicating mixed public sentiment regarding his performance as Prime Minister, reports BritPanorama.

A YouGov survey reveals that one in three individuals who anticipated strong performance from Burnham now express disappointment. Overall, only 23 percent believe the new Prime Minister has met positive expectations, while 12 percent came away disillusioned.

As he marks this milestone on Tuesday, Burnham’s leadership will be scrutinised more closely with Chancellor John Healey set to deliver his first Budget, presenting a key test for the new administration.

The poll indicates a further 23 percent of respondents reported that Burnham’s performance matched their expectations, and 14 percent of those who initially expected him to perform poorly noted a better-than-expected showing. Yet a significant portion remains uncertain about their views.

Polling analyst Lord Hayward commented that the results reflect a perception of Burnham as “adequate so far, but untested.” He anticipates that the upcoming Budget, described as more about “delaying” than governing, could lead to escalating disappointment among the electorate.

Earlier in the month, Healey hinted at a rigorous Budget process that may not provide additional funding for public services, including healthcare, indicating further challenges ahead.

While attending an International Monetary Fund meeting in Bangkok, Healey acknowledged the financial pressures faced by the UK, remarking that departments would need to “manage with the budgets we’ve got.”

YouGov stated that while the poll outcomes are “not overwhelmingly positive,” they represent a notable improvement compared to former Labour leader Keir Starmer’s initial months in office, where only 12 percent felt Labour had met their positive expectations.

Dylan Difford, a data journalist at YouGov, noted that Burnham has maintained positive personal ratings longer than any Prime Minister in nearly a decade, although opinions remain sharply divided along political lines.

As the pressures mount ahead of critical financial announcements, Burnham’s ability to navigate these challenges will be crucial for sustaining public trust in his leadership.
