Covid vaccination rates drop significantly among American adults
Only 23% of American adults received a covid vaccine during the 2024-25 season, a stark decline from the initial uptake of approximately 75% in early 2022, raising concerns among health care experts as new U.S. government recommendations emerge, reports BritPanorama.
This drop in vaccination is notable compared to the 47% of American adults who opted for a flu shot during the same period. Vaccination rates for other vaccines, including flu, measles, and tetanus, have also seen a downward trend. Despite these figures, covid remains a significant health threat, with about 31,400 death certificates citing it as a primary cause of death last year. In comparison, flu-related deaths numbered around 6,500, with pneumonia claiming an additional 41,600 lives, according to CDC data.
The upcoming season poses challenges as public health researchers anticipate further declines in vaccination rates, particularly among Hispanic and Black Americans, and individuals under 30, all of whom face increased risks such as long covid. Amid shifting policies from the previous administration, barriers to accessing vaccines have compounded these concerns, especially in Republican-leaning states where pharmacy access may be more restricted.
Experts have cited widespread misinformation regarding covid as a contributor to vaccine hesitancy, leading to fears about side effects and long-term health consequences. “Vaccine hesitancy is going to increase,” stated Alein Haro-Ramos, an assistant professor at the University of California-Irvine. Furthermore, recent guidance from the Food and Drug Administration has narrowed vaccine approval primarily to older adults and those with underlying conditions, drawing criticism from infectious disease professionals advocating for broader vaccination.
More than two dozen states are actively working to facilitate easier access to covid shots at pharmacies. Many of these states are aligning their policies with recommendations from prominent medical organizations, ensuring vaccine coverage without extra costs for most individuals. However, in states with Republican representation, accessing vaccines often necessitates a prescription.
Reasons for vaccine hesitancy are multi-faceted, including distrust in pharmaceutical companies and government health officials. This issue is particularly pronounced among Latino and African American populations, with studies indicating that misinformation and fears related to immigration status further hinder vaccine uptake.
The 2024-25 season illustrated a significant decrease in vaccination rates among young adults aged 18 to 29, with only 11% choosing to receive the covid vaccine, far below the 70% who had received at least one dose by November 2023. This shift corresponds with a broader belief among younger demographics that they are less susceptible to serious outcomes from the virus.
Despite this perception, health experts remind the public that vaccines are crucial in preventing severe illness and complications, including long covid. Otto Yang, an infectious disease specialist, noted that while vaccinated individuals can still contract covid, the vaccines play a vital role in reducing the severity of symptoms.
