New series of Grantchester features Rishi Nair as vicar Alphy tackling village mysteries

Grantchester returns for final series with new vicar Alphy

New episodes of Grantchester, the long-running ITV series, mark the arrival of Rishi Nair as Alphy Kottaram, the village’s latest sleuthing vicar, reports BritPanorama.

This installment sees Alphy engaging directly with a community characterized by its uncharacteristically high rate of crime. Previous narrative arcs explored the reactions of the predominantly white parish to a South Asian vicar, but this element appears to have receded, allowing Alphy to focus primarily on resolving various murder cases rather than tending to his parishioners’ spiritual needs.

Alphy is depicted spending significantly more time collaborating with DI Geordie Keating, portrayed by Robson Green, than fulfilling his clerical duties. Such a shift may lead parishioners to question the priorities of their new vicar.

The series opens with a murder at the village’s Easter fete, where a worshipper is shot while protesting what he perceives as the event’s trivialization of the holiday. The plot features elements of identity, romance, and greed, although critics suggest that the crime narrative feels somewhat obligatory, reminiscent of lesser-known episodes from other mystery series.

Fans of the show have expressed a greater interest in the personal lives of main characters. Leonard Finch, played by Al Weaver, faces new challenges following the death of his estranged father, which leads him down a troubling path. The vicarage’s housekeeper, Sylvia Chapman (Tessa Peake-Jones), is also undergoing her own personal crisis, while Alphy finds a glimmer of romance with a new librarian, Meg (Christie Russell-Brown).

Grantchester has been noted for its appealing cast, featuring previous vicars such as James Norton’s Sidney Chambers and Tom Brittney’s William Davenport. While the show has resonated globally, viewership in the UK has significantly declined since its premiere in 2014, likely due to an oversaturation of similar cozy crime dramas.

With the announcement that Grantchester will conclude after its forthcoming series, there are concerns about Nair’s opportunity to make a lasting impact in a role already on borrowed time, raising questions about the show’s future direction.

Grantchester continues tomorrow at 9pm on ITV1
