Sandwich Sandwich plans 1,000-sarnie giveaway for opening of first grab-and-go branch

Fast-growing chain Sandwich Sandwich is preparing to open its fourth store in London in two years

A fast-growing sandwich chain founded in Bristol some 15 years ago is opening its fourth branch in London in just over two years, reports BritPanorama. Sandwich Sandwich, which was first launched in Cotham by former restaurateur Nick Kleiner, has established a firm fan base since pictures of its doorstop-sized sarnies went viral on social media in 2024.

The family-run company opened a branch on Tottenham Court Road in September and in October announced plans for its first franchise in Dubai. The popular chain is now preparing to open its first-ever ‘grab-and-go’ store at 1 Broadgate early this year as the business targets the food-to-go market.

The branch will sell Sandwich Sandwich’s full menu, made every morning by the team and packaged into boxes ready for customers to buy and go. It will also serve coffee, freshly baked pastries made on-site, including sausage rolls and scotch eggs, Sandwich Sandwich said.

“For too long, pre-packaged food to go, especially sandwiches, has lacked creativity and care,” said Mr Kleiner. “This store is our response to that. Broadgate allows us to show that grab-and-go and food to go in general, can still be genuinely exciting and creative.”

The project has been 18 months in the making, involving the design of custom packaging and investment in new refrigerated vans. Positioned in one of London’s busiest commercial districts, Sandwich Sandwich said the new grab-and-go format brought the business closer to its “long-held goal” of expanding into transport hubs such as train stations and airports in the future.

The date of the store’s opening has not yet been confirmed but Sandwich Sandwich has suggested it will give away 1,000 free sandwiches to customers at the Broadgate store on the opening day.

Mr Kleiner said: “Opening in the Broadgate development marks an exciting new chapter for all of us at Sandwich Sandwich. It highlights our very first purely grab-and-go location and our further commitment to the City. It’s identical to the Sandwich Sandwich our customers love us for; fast, focused, yet still very much us, offering generosity, quality and now speed!”

“We believe it’s a necessary evolution for the business and one that’s been shaped entirely around our fantastic customers, their busy schedules and their high expectations. We are super excited to welcome you all very soon.”

The evolution of Sandwich Sandwich reflects broader trends in the food retail sector, particularly the growing demand for convenience among consumers. As urban lifestyles continue to accelerate, businesses that adapt quickly to provide accessible options stand to benefit significantly. This development positions the chain not just for immediate success but also towards future expansions in transport hubs, aligning with consumer expectations in a rapidly changing market landscape.
