Family of Sven-Göran Eriksson sells lakeside mansion
The family of former England boss Sven-Göran Eriksson have reportedly sold his luxury lakeside mansion in Sweden to settle his £8 million debt, reports BritPanorama.
Eriksson, who served as the England national football team’s manager, died in August 2022 at age 76 after a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer. He passed away at the lakeside residence in Torsby, Värmland.
The property, initially listed for £2 million, was sold for a significantly lower amount. The family reduced its asking price by £400,000 to attract buyers, ultimately selling the seven-bedroom home known as Björkefors for at least £1.3 million to an unnamed businesswoman from the e-commerce sector.
This sale represents just one part of the efforts to address Eriksson’s substantial financial liabilities, which included £7.4 million owed in tax to HMRC due to a failed investment scheme deemed illegal by authorities. In addition to this, further obligations of around £1 million brought total debts to approximately £8.4 million.
Despite the property having considerable assets valued at nearly £5 million, it suffered a shortfall of £3.7 million, prompting the family to sell the mansion as well as personal items. The new owner has expressed a desire to maintain the property as a site for family gatherings, aiming to preserve its legacy.
During his extensive managerial career across twelve clubs, Eriksson made substantial earnings, notably £22 million from his five years with England from 2001 to 2006. Earlier this year, his family auctioned memorabilia for £140,000, including his Armani suit from the 2006 World Cup.
The disposal of the estate highlights the precarious nature of financial legacies, reminding us that not all sporting achievements translate into lasting wealth.
