Protests sweep Spain after deadly train collision raises safety concerns

Spain’s second high-speed train crash in 2025 leaves several Americans injured

Spain experienced another major train accident, this time involving a collision between a RENFE train and a stationary IRYO train, resulting in injuries to several Americans, reports BritPanorama.

Jacksonville firefighter Josue Garcia-Otero was among the passengers, along with seven family members. He recounted the ordeal: “We got to safety first, then began treating other patients that were critically injured,” he said in a release from the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department. “My wife is a nurse, and she was helping too.”

In response to the crash, Spain’s transport minister, Óscar Puente, pledged a thorough investigation and reforms to the train safety system. He emphasized the need to restore trust in the country’s high-speed rail, stating that it was “not acceptable for a country like Spain to endure two high-speed train accidents in the same year,” referencing a previous incident in January that resulted in 46 fatalities.

Both incidents involved units operated by state-owned RENFE and privately owned IRYO. Puente indicated that the latest crash was precipitated by an “inexplicable” directive from a central command center after a security system failure halted train operations. The malfunction led to the order for the RENFE train to resume service without speed restrictions, culminating in the collision at 8:53 a.m.

Riot police were deployed outside the transport ministry in Madrid due to escalating tensions among protesters calling for Puente’s resignation. Demonstrators, reportedly from far-right groups, clashed with officers and hurled objects, voicing their anger towards both Puente and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

How this accident may impact Sánchez’s political future is uncertain, particularly as he prepares for a snap election next month following difficulties in advancing housing legislation. His government has faced recent turmoil, exemplified by the eviction of an elderly woman in Madrid that triggered a nationwide outcry.

Sánchez, who has navigated multiple crises since taking office in 2018, including the Covid-19 pandemic and rising inflation, now confronts pressure from right-wing opposition over his liberal policies and corruption allegations, which both he and his party deny. As he approaches the upcoming election, polling indicates that securing favorable voter sentiment will be challenging.

The situation in Spain remains fluid, with ongoing investigations and public unrest likely to affect the political landscape in the near term.
