Officials confirmed that a six-day ceasefire in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, southern Ukraine, held for its first day, reports BritPanorama. The localized truce began on Tuesday and aims to last through Sunday, facilitating a humanitarian mission to deliver food and medicine to approximately 2,000 remaining residents and providing evacuation options for those who wish to leave.
This ceasefire marks a potential breakthrough, as it would be the first significant truce observed since Russia’s invasion over four and a half years ago. Prior attempts to halt the fighting have either collapsed or failed to gain traction. With Moscow and Kyiv at a standstill over key demands, this brief respite could offer a rare opportunity for aid.
U.S.-led plans to revisit negotiations next month for more extensive peace talks coincide with the ceasefire. Despite ongoing hostilities in other areas, the ceasefire in Oleshky appears relatively stable, with both sides reporting no violations for the first 30 hours.
The humanitarian crisis in Oleshky piqued the interest of U.S. First Lady Melania Trump, who has been instrumental in brokering the mission. Meanwhile, Pope Leo XIV has also urged both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin to permit humanitarian aid into the besieged city.
President Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for Melania Trump’s involvement, noting the establishment of humanitarian corridors for evacuations. “We are grateful that they are organizing this possibility to evacuate people,” Zelenskyy stated, emphasizing that Ukraine is prepared to accept evacuees.
Elsewhere, the war rages on
In a separate escalation, a Russian drone strike on Kharkiv overnight resulted in injuries to five individuals, including a four-year-old child, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service. The attack started a significant fire affecting an apartment building, a private residence, and an industrial structure.
Russian Defense Ministry officials reported that air defenses intercepted 531 Ukrainian drones from late Tuesday to early Wednesday, indicating ongoing aerial engagements. Casualties were reported from strikes targeting both residential and industrial regions.
The fragile ceasefire in Oleshky is a notable yet small reprieve amid a broader conflict that continues to escalate elsewhere in Ukraine.
