Reform UK falls to third in polls as Burnham aims for Labour majority

The prospect of Reform UK winning a general election appears to be disappearing after a second poll in a row left them in third place behind the Labour Party and the Conservatives, reports BritPanorama.

Just 24 hours after Nigel Farage and his Treasury spokesman Robert Jenrick unveiled their alternative budget to an empty hall, a YouGov poll confirmed that Reform is trailing behind on just 20 per cent support. Labour, marking 100 days under Prime Minister Andy Burnham, scored 27 per cent — enough to secure a small majority of eight seats, according to the prediction website Electoral Calculus.

Labour’s share remains unchanged from last week’s YouGov poll, while the Tories are down one point to 22 per cent. Reform’s figures, down two points from last week, reflect a dramatic collapse from over 30 per cent in polling a year ago.

These findings follow a series of missteps for Mr Farage, who faced embarrassment presenting the alternative budget after an almost empty attendance, attributed to late invitations. The previous week, he was booed in Plymouth for confusing it with Portsmouth, and controversy looms over a comment made by a supporter, raising accusations of racism toward Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch.

Mr Farage has encountered scrutiny from the parliamentary standards commissioner regarding a £5 million donation from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne, alongside police investigations into Jenrick and deputy leader Richard Tice. Investigations by ITV have also uncovered widespread racism within Reform UK, prompting the resignations of chief of staff Dan Jukes and policy director James Orr following a Channel 4 sting operation intended to expose illegal foreign donations.

In light of these setbacks, Mr Farage hopes that Prime Minister Burnham’s reopening of the Brexit debate will revive his party’s fortunes. He has criticized Burnham, asserting that he “has no mandate to be in Brussels negotiating any of it” and accused him of “absolute dishonesty” for previous remarks suggesting that discussions regarding Britain’s relationship with the EU should remain closed.

The ongoing challenges facing Reform UK reflect deeper issues within the party and the broader political landscape, indicating a turbulent road ahead as they struggle for relevance in a shifting electorate.
