Farage recorded suggesting apology for Reform candidate's racist remarks against Lammy

Farage under scrutiny over racism allegations involving Reform UK mayoral candidate

Reform UK is facing renewed scrutiny following the release of undercover footage showing leader Nigel Farage discussing a party mayoral candidate’s alleged racist remarks, reports BritPanorama.

The secretly filmed material reveals Farage telling his director of communications, Ed Sumner, that the candidate for Hampshire and the Solent, Chris Parry, should apologise to Labour MP David Lammy for a controversial social media post. In January, Parry had posted that Lammy should “go home to the Caribbean,” in a comment that drew widespread condemnation.

Sumner pointed out that Farage seemed to be “protecting” Parry, to which Farage responded, “It’s showing a bit of… bit of sorrow. Look, ‘I’m sorry’ is probably a good thing to hear. Just take the f***ing deal.” The comments were made shortly after a press conference where Farage had indicated that Parry should apologise.

Parry’s original remark was condemned as “racist and grossly offensive” by Labour. He later apologised, stating he regretted any distress caused. The ITV documentary airing this footage has reignited discussions about the party’s handling of race-related issues.

In the footage, Farage insisted Parry “must apologise to Lammy,” though Sumner expressed frustration, suggesting Parry was unhappy with the message crafted for him to send. After Farage departed, Sumner remarked that he would have expelled Parry if it were his choice.

Parry has previously faced backlash for another incident that involved likening a Jewish neighbourhood watch group to “Islamists on horseback” following an arson attack on Jewish ambulances. After that, he was suspended from the party.

In response to the leaked footage, Sumner told ITV News that no wrongdoing or breaches of policy were disclosed by him, insisting he does not support extremism or bigotry.

The Labour Party has declared the revelations “shocking and deeply disturbing,” urging Farage to explain why he continues to support Parry instead of expelling him. Labour Party chair Bridget Phillipson stated that these issues reach the upper echelons of Reform UK, holding Farage personally accountable for his leadership choices.

Philipson also emphasized that Farage has repeatedly been given opportunities to demonstrate responsible leadership but always seems to falter. She remarked, “In Reform’s own words: they’re defending the indefensible. They are completely unfit for office.”

The documentary also revealed other troubling comments, including an instance where Reform MP Sarah Pochin mentioned that senior party officials would “just exclude you if you are a woman,” expressing concern over the party’s culture as the only female member of parliament at the time.

Reform UK has responded to these accusations, asserting that Pochin’s concerns were taken seriously and that the party has evolved significantly in a short period, committed to addressing issues as they emerge.

Furthermore, details from vetting interviews conducted for potential candidates revealed instances of pressure to distance oneself from controversial figures, illustrating internal party dynamics regarding acceptance and inclusion.

Ultimately, Reform UK expressed their discontent with ITV for what they termed “extreme methods of deception” in their investigative approach, categorically denying tolerance for racism within the party.

As the scrutiny of Reform UK continues, it remains a pivotal moment for the party as it grapples with these serious allegations and the public’s response to its internal governance.
