Andy Burnham: Manchester City owners did not mention Premier League charges during our meetings

Andy Burnham clarifies Manchester City meeting amid financial scrutiny

Andy Burnham has stated that Manchester City’s owners and directors did not mention the Premier League’s charges against the club during his meetings with them, reports BritPanorama.

The Prime Minister expressed satisfaction in detailing the meetings, which were made public on Monday. Manchester City has faced severe scrutiny, having been found guilty of breaching the Premier League’s financial rules, including multiple charges related to a lack of cooperation with the league’s investigation.

On the same day, it emerged that Burnham had a formal meeting with Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak at an investment summit, attended former City captain Vincent Kompany’s testimonial, and was often accompanied by club staff on official trips.

During Prime Minister’s Questions, Conservative MP Jerome Mayhew pressed Burnham about these interactions. Mayhew questioned whether anyone from Manchester City raised the recent charges in conversations with him or his team.

Burnham replied, “They did not raise those issues with me. I’m very happy, Mr Speaker, for everything to be set out in full.” He further noted that he requested a comprehensive statement from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) regarding his dealings with the club’s owners in response to inquiries from the Leader of the Opposition and others.

“That statement was published on Monday, and it includes the issues in the news today,” he added. Burnham’s contacts with the club during his time as Greater Manchester Mayor had been officially disclosed this week.

A spokesman for the GMCA indicated that Burnham’s formal meeting with Al Mubarak occurred in October 2021 at the UK Government’s Global Investment Summit and clarified that Burnham had attended a limited number of Manchester City home matches, including Kompany’s testimonial in September 2019, where he met Al Mubarak informally.

“These have been declared in the usual way,” stated the spokesman. The representative also mentioned that during his mayoral term, various sports club officials had accompanied him on international business delegations, with Manchester City being part of those efforts.

Burnham’s transparency about his interactions with the club underscores how institutional ties can intersect with sports governance, particularly as Manchester City faces intense scrutiny over its financial practices. The evolving situation around the club may continue to raise questions about accountability and transparency in football.
