Alan Smith questions Manchester United’s squad ahead of Tottenham clash

Former Manchester United star Alan Smith has expressed concerns about whether the Red Devils possess the necessary players to compete for elite honors, particularly as they prepare to face Tottenham at Old Trafford on Saturday night, reports BritPanorama.

Manchester United’s campaign has begun sluggishly, with the team accumulating just five points from their opening five matches. Early optimism surrounding the arrivals of Youri Tielemans and Andre Santos has been dimmed by defeats against Hull and Manchester City, alongside a struggle to secure wins away at Fulham and Everton.

As United gears up for the match against Tottenham, a victory is crucial for manager Michael Carrick to alleviate rising pressure. In a recent interview, Smith voiced his worries about the team’s depth and competitiveness. “If you look through the Manchester United team itself, have you got the players? Other than Bruno Fernandes, who has been in this situation before,” he noted, questioning the readiness of younger players.

Smith highlighted that even key players like Marcus Rashford have not been involved in crucial matches for some time, raising doubts about the experience level within the squad. He pointed out the limitations of newer team members, asking, “How many big derby games has Kobbie Mainoo played?” A lack of experience against teams that tend to adopt a defensive approach has further compounded Smith’s concerns.

United’s signing of Tielemans was initially celebrated as a strategic win during the transfer window, but a noticeable inconsistency has left fans yearning for the reliability that Casemiro provided in midfield. Smith suggested that the Belgian international’s struggles might stem from having represented his country in the World Cup, which left him with little time to adapt to his new club environment.

“There’s been so many players who played in the World Cup; I feel there’s still a hangover from that for a few players,” he remarked, considering the toll that such an intense tournament might have taken on their performance levels. Tielemans, having suffered an injury during the competition, was specifically mentioned as possibly still being affected by the aftermath of that experience.

As United readies for the 5 PM kickoff against Tottenham, who also find themselves at the bottom of the Premier League with only two points from their opening five matches, all eyes will be on the team’s ability to secure a vital three points and regain some lost momentum.

The pressure is mounting, and for United fans, each match feels like an essential test of their squad’s resolve and capacity. How the Red Devils will respond remains a matter of keen interest, epitomizing how fervent hope and harsh reality coexist in the world of football.
