Drones strike Yandex data center in Russia

Drones hit a major data center in Russia’s Ryazan region owned by the country’s leading Artificial Intelligence and technology company Yandex, the company said on Thursday, reports BritPanorama.

The attack caused a fire and forced the company to fully suspend the center’s operations. Yandex stated it was addressing the aftermath and working towards restoring the affected services.

Despite this incident, Yandex assured that its core consumer services remained unaffected. The company operates YandexGPT, one of Russia’s leading generative AI models.

This attack on the Yandex data center followed a wave of Russian strikes targeting Ukrainian data centers in recent weeks. Until now, there had been no verified major Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian data centers.

On the website of its Yandex Cloud service, the company reported issues with the electricity supply at one data center “zone” and advised customers to utilize other zones.
