Jorge Jesus responds to Cristiano Ronaldo’s statement
Jorge Jesus has given his first response to Cristiano Ronaldo’s extraordinary account of their falling-out, revealing he had not yet read the statement in which the Portugal captain accused him of breaking his word, reports BritPanorama.
The forward left Portugal’s training camp before their Nations League match against Denmark. Ronaldo stated that the dispute originated from being left on the bench during the match against Norway, despite believing he would be selected to play.
Later, Ronaldo apologised for his abrupt departure but maintained his availability to represent Portugal. Jesus was questioned about the situation as he returned home after observing the Portugal Under-21s play against the Czech Republic. The manager, who has won all four of his Nations League matches, acknowledged he had yet to review Ronaldo’s comments, saying, “I will read the statement now, and I have nothing to say.”
The exchange comes as tensions between Ronaldo and Jesus resurface. Ronaldo’s detailed statement outlined a series of events that led to his exit from the squad, charging Jesus with breaking his word on two occasions. He indicated they had initially agreed that he would miss the matches against Norway and Denmark to manage his fitness but was later told he would play for 30 minutes against Norway—only to remain as an unused substitute despite warming up during halftime.
Ronaldo also claimed that a document was prepared, clarifying he had not demanded playing time and had respected the manager’s decisions. His assertion suggests a breakdown in communication, stating that Jesus’s comments did not align with their discussions. This disagreement prompted Ronaldo to leave the camp rather than risk further dissatisfaction.
In his public reflection, Ronaldo expressed regret over his conduct and apologised to teammates and fans for his behaviour after the Norway match. Despite the ongoing friction, he stopped short of announcing his retirement from international football, stating he would be willing to return once fit and playing for his club.
The relationship between Jesus and Ronaldo, complicated by their history at Al-Nassr, now stands as a significant issue within the national team’s framework, even as Portugal enjoys a successful run in the Nations League. How this dynamic evolves could reveal much about the future of both coach and captain.
