Jorge Jesus leaves door open for Cristiano Ronaldo's return to Portugal national team

Jorge Jesus says Cristiano Ronaldo can return to Portugal squad

Cristiano Ronaldo can return to Portugal if he wants to, head coach Jorge Jesus has said, after the captain recently left the squad during a Nations League camp, reports BritPanorama.

The veteran forward departed after remaining an unused substitute in Portugal’s match against Norway, where his absence was sorely felt during a tight 2-1 victory that ensured the team’s progression to the quarter-finals.

Ronaldo had previously indicated he would clarify his reasons for leaving, stating on social media, “In due course, I will tell the truth to all the Portuguese people about my reasons for leaving the national team, to which I have always been dedicated.”

Jorge Jesus, who had Ronaldo under his management at Al-Nassr, confirmed that the decision regarding his future with the national team rests solely with the player. “If he wants to, he’ll return to the national team. We can talk before the next call-up, but Cris is the one who’s going to decide,” Jesus expressed.

The coach emphasised Ronaldo’s right to determine how his international career concludes. He reiterated his desire for the forward to be involved in the setup, regardless of whether he plays or not. “Cristiano should end his time in the national team the way he wants; he’s the one who will decide how he wants it,” Jesus added.

Portugal’s forthcoming fixtures include a match against Denmark on November 14, followed by an encounter against Wales three days later. Ronaldo’s absence was noticeable, yet the team managed to secure wins in both matches without him, showcasing their depth and resolve.

Despite his recent dissatisfaction, Ronaldo remains Portugal’s all-time leading scorer with 146 goals in 234 appearances. Teammates such as João Cancelo and Nuno Mendes have publicly acknowledged Ronaldo’s stature, asserting that the squad would welcome him back “with open arms.”

As Ronaldo shifts focus back to his club duties with Al-Nassr, where they are set to face Diriyah on Friday, the door remains ajar for a potential return to the national team. This situation highlights not only the ongoing evolution of Ronaldo’s illustrious career but also the complexities surrounding an athlete of his prominence in international football.
