Bruno Fernandes addresses Ronaldo’s departure from Portugal camp

Bruno Fernandes has revealed the message he gave Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portugal captain abruptly left the national team’s training camp, insisting the veteran forward remains an enduring symbol of the country, reports BritPanorama.

Ronaldo left Portugal’s camp in Copenhagen ahead of their Nations League fixture against Denmark. In a statement, he said the decision followed head coach Jorge Jesus’s press conference and a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença. “After the national team coach’s press conference, and following a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I have decided to leave the national team training camp,” he wrote.

Fernandes expressed that he had spoken directly to Ronaldo following his departure. “I had a chat with him and what I said to him is what I’ll repeat here: Cristiano Ronaldo will never cease to be the greatest symbol of our national team, of our football and of the country,” he stated. He urged Portuguese supporters not to let the episode divide them, amid ongoing questions regarding Ronaldo’s future with the national squad.

The 41-year-old’s exit followed his recent benching in Portugal’s Nations League win over Norway, a situation Jesus confirmed had left Ronaldo disappointed without suggesting any serious falling-out had occurred. “It’s not difficult for me to focus. You know what’s difficult for me? It’s not understanding what’s going on inside. It’s not knowing how to train my players. That’s what’s difficult for me. The rest… zero,” Jesus remarked, asserting that the controversy would not fracture the team.

Fernandes, meanwhile, rejected suggestions that the squad had been split by the dispute, rallying for unity. In the meantime, Ronaldo drew attention for liking a social media post from former Brazil international Felipe Melo, who criticized perceived disparities in treatment between him and Lionel Messi.

Portugal secured a 4-2 victory over Denmark without their captain, now looking ahead to their upcoming home Nations League match against Norway. Ronaldo’s next steps and his international future remain uncertain.

In football, as in life, the thread between brilliance and discord is often paper-thin; Ronaldo’s next move could redefine not just his legacy but also the dynamics of this storied national team.
