Gerwyn Price reaches World Grand Prix final

Gerwyn Price has accused Nathan Aspinall of “performing” on stage after beating the Englishman 5-2 to reach the World Grand Prix final, where he will face Luke Humphries, reports BritPanorama.

The Welsh star secured his place in Sunday evening’s showpiece in Leicester with a composed finish, despite Aspinall’s spirited fightback and frustration over the crowd’s reaction at the Mattioli Arena.

Price surged into a three-set lead as Aspinall struggled to replicate the form that had seen him average 105.15 against Ryan Joyce in the quarter-finals. His reaction ensured that crowd disputes overshadowed Aspinall’s late resurgence.

Aspinall briefly threatened to change the tide of the match with a superb 132 checkout, the highest finish of the contest, taking the next set to reduce the deficit to 3-2. However, Price steadied himself and won the next two sets without reply to seal the victory and a spot in the final.

Following the match, Price expressed his frustration over Aspinall’s complaints regarding the crowd. “I’m glad to come through the game. Nathan was complaining about the crowd, but they were on his side,” Price told Sky Sports.

Price will now meet world number two Humphries, who overcame James Wade 5-3 in the other semi-final. Humphries averaged 96.92, fired 10 maximums, and reached the World Grand Prix final for a fourth consecutive time.

His scoring prowess has made him a consistent contender at the tournament, as evidenced by his impressive tally of maximums and nearly 97 average. Despite claiming the title in 2023, Humphries seeks to break a streak of defeats in the last two finals, emphasizing the need to capture the trophy this time round.

“I’ve got to do it again because there are so many major finals I’ve let slip. Gezzy [Price] is playing well, but if I play like that again, it’s going to be a cracking game, and I hope it is,” Humphries remarked.

The upcoming final presents Price with an opportunity to clinch a significant title, having weathered Aspinall’s late press, while Humphries aims to turn his remarkable run of consecutive World Grand Prix finals into another championship triumph. The clash will see two of the sport’s biggest names face off, as Humphries’ scoring strength meets Price’s momentum after a challenging semi-final night in Leicester.

As the tension builds, the final promises to be a compelling contest, illustrating how the lines between skill and spectacle can blur in the world of darts.
