Russian airstrikes disrupt traffic on three key Kyiv bridges, a new tactic in warfare

Russian aerial attacks forced the partial closure Friday of three bridges over the Dnipro River in Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital’s mayor said, in Moscow’s latest effort to disrupt life in the city, reports BritPanorama.

Ukrainian officials reported that the Russian strikes induced heavy traffic congestion as residents faced significant disruptions in their daily routines. One of the targeted bridges suffered further damage Friday afternoon, according to Mayor Vitalii Klitschko.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s top diplomat announced proposals for a partial truce with Russia, aimed at halting attacks on energy infrastructure and Black Sea shipping critical for grain exports. The proposals have come from the United States, India, Turkey, and Egypt.

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, highlighted the escalating human rights crisis in Ukraine, calling the conflict “a human rights catastrophe” affecting civilians amid a backdrop of intensified aerial warfare and stagnant front-line fighting.

Ukraine has made some territorial gains this year, with a report indicating that Russian forces lost nearly 300 square kilometers (116 square miles) of territory between March and September. The Russian military also reportedly faced over 46,000 casualties in September alone—the highest monthly count recorded this year.

Zelenskyy says sanctions can stop Russian drones and missiles

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russia launched more than 100 drones targeting Ukraine overnight, hitting Kyiv and multiple other regions, with many drones being the advanced jet-powered type that are difficult to intercept.

In the attacks, a drone struck a high-rise apartment building in Kyiv, resulting in one death and several injuries elsewhere. Zelenskyy has called for foreign nations to tighten sanctions against Russia, emphasizing that the production of drones and missiles is critically reliant on foreign components.

Ukraine has responded by launching its drones and missiles against Russian military targets and oil refineries. The Russian Defense Ministry stated that its air defenses intercepted numerous Ukrainian drones during these confrontations.

Ukraine is ready for a truce on energy strikes and the Black Sea

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha indicated that the truce proposals represent a notable involvement from India, reflecting its balancing act between ties with Russia and growing cooperation with Western nations. Sybiha asserted Ukraine’s willingness to accept a ceasefire if it includes stopping attacks on both energy infrastructure and maritime activities crucial for grain export.

Despite Kyiv’s readiness to agree to a ceasefire on the front line, Russia has remained steadfast in its position, insisting that any peace deal must be comprehensive rather than temporary.

Sybiha has also pointed to Ukraine’s need for approximately 300 Patriot missiles from partner countries, citing Russian stockpiles of ballistic missiles and their capacity to produce new ones.

Ukraine needs more funding and quickly, foreign minister says

Addressing financial needs, Sybiha emphasized the urgency for funding to support future drone production. Ukraine currently anticipates a budget deficit of about $27 billion this year, despite assistance pledged by the European Union.

On Friday, the European Commission announced it had transferred $3.3 billion to Ukraine, a step seen as vital for maintaining financial stability and bolstering national defense against ongoing aggression.

As the situation unfolds, the economic challenges continue to beset both Russia and Ukraine as high military expenditures multiply pressures on their financial systems.
