Small firms lose £3.7 billion annually due to missed calls
Research indicates that small businesses in the UK are forfeiting £3.7 billion each year because of missed calls, with sectors such as the construction industry and hairdressing particularly affected, reports BritPanorama.
According to the study, more than half of small firms, specifically 56%, fail to leverage new technology effectively, resulting in two-thirds of them missing out on at least one potentially valuable call each day. This pattern highlights a significant issue in customer engagement strategies.
The findings, produced by BT Business, reveal that a sizable 75% of customers expect a firm to return their call within three attempts; after that, many abandon their inquiry altogether. Alarmingly, over half of all customers would share their negative experiences with friends and family if they felt ignored by a business.
In an effort to address these challenges, BT Business has launched its AI receptionist service, designed to answer calls continuously and assist companies in scheduling appointments. This technological advancement aims to help tradespeople, along with hairdressers and hospitality providers, manage client interactions more efficiently.
Michelle Ovens, CEO and Founder of Small Business Britain, remarked, “Small businesses can often feel they are fighting a losing battle, having to cover everything from finance and HR to marketing with limited headcount. AI can be an incredible help, and when utilised correctly, it is a cost-effective and fast way of managing the front line of customer service. We know that time-poor customers want quick resolutions, and when businesses can’t provide this, revenue is lost.”
Ovens emphasised the crucial role that efficient customer service plays in the growth potential of small enterprises. Jon James, CEO of BT Business, echoed this sentiment, stating, “AI has the potential to be a huge boost to small businesses and to drive the UK’s growth, but many businesses are struggling to know how to begin and how to adopt simply and securely. AI Receptionist is the first step in the journey, helping businesses capture every opportunity, reduce admin and deliver responsive, personalised service around the clock, while keeping their customer data protected.”
As small businesses look to the future, embracing technological innovations like AI may determine their success and resilience in a rapidly evolving marketplace.
In an era where customer expectations continuously rise, the ability of small businesses to adapt and respond effectively will be critical not only for individual success but also for the broader economic health of the UK.
