Netanyahu hails pilot as hero following Flydubai flight hijacking attempt

UAE orders investigation into flydubai incident

The United Arab Emirates has launched an investigation into a hijacking attempt on a Flydubai flight that occurred during its journey from Dubai to Israel, raising concerns over potential terrorist links, reports BritPanorama.

During the incident, the flight, designated FZ1073, dramatically descended nearly 13,000 feet within 30 seconds amid the chaos on Wednesday morning. UAE authorities have stated they will investigate whether the hijacking involved prior planning or directed actions.

The incident falls under the jurisdiction of Abu Dhabi authorities due to the aircraft’s UAE registration, which mandates that their laws apply even if the crime occurs outside their territory. This investigation comes following Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s indication that it is premature to point to a suspect, although he condemned the event as driven by extreme fanatical hatred.

On a Fox News segment, Netanyahu praised the flight’s captain, Captain Smit Machchhar, calling him a “true hero” after he was stabbed during the attempted hijacking. Eyewitnesses recounted that passengers wrested control of the cockpit back from the assailant, creating a situation reminiscent of a rollercoaster as the plane nosedived.

Following Saudi Arabia’s intervention, the assailant was arrested, while the injured captain has been celebrated for his courage amidst the turmoil. Reports indicate that some passengers attempted to assist in controlling the aircraft during the crisis, averting a possible disaster.

Additionally, the UAE’s prosecutor general emphasized the importance of this investigation in shedding light on the motives behind the incident and whether it may be linked to any terrorist activity. As the inquiry progresses, the ramifications of this event will likely resonate throughout the region, underscoring ongoing concerns related to aviation security.

This incident marks a significant challenge for both the UAE’s aviation sector and regional stability, necessitating thorough scrutiny and response from the relevant authorities.
