KYIV, 28 September 2026 — A Russian drone attack killed a 44-year-old woman in Kyiv, damaged a building belonging to Ukraine’s National Academy of Sciences and struck the Dobrobut medical centre, according to Ukrainian officials and the medical network.
Ukrainian police said the woman was killed when a drone hit a building in central Kyiv. Rescue crews worked at the damaged academy while fires burned inside.
A separate strike damaged Dobrobut’s medical centre on Antonovycha Street. The network said seven people were injured, including six members of staff, and that the centre would close for the following days. It said its employees and visitors survived.
Germany’s foreign ministry condemned the strike on the academy and noted its proximity to the German embassy. The European Union’s ambassador to Ukraine said a drone had hit a building about 200 metres from the EU delegation’s office.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Europe was increasing its efforts to strengthen Ukraine’s defence. Ukraine has asked its partners for additional air-defence systems and interceptors, as well as tighter sanctions and increased pressure on Russia.
Ukraine’s foreign minister repeated those requests after the strike on the academy. The available statements did not specify which additional measures European governments would take or when they might be delivered.
