Five men were arrested on suspicion of explosive and terrorism offences after a farmer reported suspicious activity near RAF Fairford early on Sunday morning, sparking a major incident response from counter-terrorism police, reports BritPanorama.
The alarm was raised when the woman noticed a “large group of hooded and masked men” emerging from three vans, prompting her to call emergency services at 1.36am. She indicated that RAF Fairford was operating at heightened security due to its role as a base for US bombers.
Defence Secretary Wes Streeting acknowledged the farmer’s quick action during an interview on BBC Radio 4, noting that while her instincts were commendable, she only had a partial understanding of the situation. The Ministry of Defence police had not responded to her initial attempts to notify them about the unusual activity, he added.
Counter-terrorism police are investigating a possible link to Iran regarding the suspected bomb plot at the base. Streeting refrained from speculating on the involvement of foreign states at this stage. The urgency of the situation intensified following information that three vans were present near the base, with considerable police presence established in the area.
The farmer expressed frustration, stating that police had “dropped the ball” and that it was astonishing she had to alert them. She described a lack of monitoring around the base which allowed the suspicious activity to occur without immediate intervention. “I believe that my 999 call foiled whatever plans they had,” she said, highlighting the delay in evacuation of nearby residents.
In subsequent comments, Streeting reiterated the importance of public vigilance and lauded the police and emergency services for their efforts to secure the area. The local community faced significant disruption, with a 400-metre cordon established and 85 homes evacuated as authorities conducted a thorough investigation of the vehicles involved.
Temporary chief constable Maggie Blyth confirmed that bomb disposal teams examined the vans, which were found with open doors and large black barrels scattered around them. The situation was described as contained, though the investigation was ongoing. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Andy Burnham remarked on the incident’s seriousness, affirming the government’s commitment to safeguarding the public.
