The Irish football team to wear black armbands for Gaza conflict victims
The Irish football team will wear black armbands against Israel “in recognition of all lives lost in [Gaza] conflict,” reports BritPanorama.
Ireland’s Football Association (FAI) chief executive, David Courell, confirmed that the match will proceed after players had previously threatened to boycott the fixture.
In addition to wearing armbands, Courell indicated that players plan to make further gestures during the game scheduled for Sunday, as well as the return match in Serbia on October 4.
During a delayed news conference, Courell stated: “One of their [the players] requests is to remove their media obligations for the remainder of this window.”
Players had voted on whether to continue with the fixture after the boycott threat, with the “majority” expressing their support for the match to go ahead. The FAI released a confirmation stating that Sunday’s game, and the fixture on October 4, will take place.
Courell also clarified the situation surrounding the players’ discomfort. “This morning a player expressed their discomfort to the head coach and indicated intent to withdraw from the squad. As you can understand, this new variable required time and deliberation for the rest of the squad to consider,” he explained.
The departing player’s concerns prompted four hours of discussions among the squad, with a focus on ensuring sensitivity to all viewpoints involved. Ultimately, a vote revealed a significant majority in favour of proceeding with the fixtures.
The Israeli FA responded positively to Ireland’s decision to fulfil the match, stating they were pleased “football has won.” They emphasized the need to separate football from politics, warning that confusion could lead to chaotic outcomes for the sport.
