Keely Hodgkinson makes a statement with competitive debut of futuristic speed suit
Keely Hodgkinson marked the competitive debut of her innovative full-body speed suit with an impressive victory in London, bringing a successful end to her season, reports BritPanorama.
The Olympic champion showcased her stunning all-black outfit at the StoneX Stadium before a sellout crowd. The custom aerodynamic suit, featuring a hood and an open back, includes 3D-printed nodes designed to minimize drag.
Hodgkinson complemented the striking appearance with dark sunglasses and Nike’s latest carbon-plated running spikes. A dedicated opening in the hood allowed her ponytail to flow freely, an essential detail in the design process, as the 24-year-old highlighted.
After her victory, Hodgkinson described the outfit as a fusion of sport, science, and fashion, suggesting it might represent the future of athletics. “This has been like a year in the making. It’s a mixture of fashion and speed and science all coming together for maybe the future of athletics,” she stated.
The suit drew comparisons to the iconic hooded attire worn by Australian athlete Cathy Freeman during her Olympic triumph in 2000. Hodgkinson appeared at ease as she raced ahead of her competition, crossing the finish line in a time of one minute and 56.40 seconds.
Swiss runner Valentina Rosamilia finished over two seconds behind, securing Hodgkinson’s first victory since the London Diamond League in July. Her efforts were rewarded with a unique silver Tiffany & Co crown and prize money amounting to $65,000 (£48,500).
The Athlos meeting, initiated by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, involved seven disciplines with six athletes each and featured other notable sprint stars like Gabby Thomas and Sha’Carri Richardson during a glamorous event complete with a red carpet.
Despite her impressive performance, Hodgkinson had faced challenges this season, including a series of setbacks that hindered her momentum. These included being edged out by Switzerland’s Audrey Werro at major championships and dealing with the aftereffects of an injury sustained in July.
In a sport that often highlights the tension between artistry and athleticism, Hodgkinson’s stylish outfit challenges the conventional aesthetics of competition, spotlighting a blend of performance and personal expression that could redefine athletics in the years to come.
