Manchester derby controversy: Haaland’s goal stands after VAR check
The Premier League Match Centre has clarified why Erling Haaland’s goal was allowed to stand in Manchester City’s narrow 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford, reports BritPanorama.
Haaland’s goal, initially ruled offside, was validated following a VAR review, despite concerns regarding Enzo Fernandez’s potential interference. Fernandez, positioned offside, attempted a diving header but did not touch the ball.
Despite Lisandro Martinez reportedly being affected by Fernandez’s actions, the goal was confirmed, granting City the three points. In a statement, the Premier League Match Centre noted, “VAR checked the referee’s call of no goal for offside – and determined that Haaland was in an onside position and recommended that the goal be awarded.”
The statement further clarified that while Fernandez was offside, he did not actively play the ball. An offside ruling typically incorporates several influencing factors, including whether a player interferes with an opponent.
VAR officials Matt Donohue and Blake Antrobus reviewed the situation, leading to referee Michael Oliver awarding the goal. United manager Michael Carrick expressed confusion over the decision, remarking on the implications for the understanding of offside rules. “If that’s the interpretation of not interfering in the game now, that’s really worrying for me,” Carrick stated. “The decision isn’t going to change the season, but it’s had a major impact on the game.”
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville also criticized the outcome, suggesting that officials would later acknowledge the error. “There is no doubt that Enzo is attempting to play the ball and putting Lisandro Martinez off. It’s a really strange one. They’ll recognise they got that wrong,” he remarked.
With this result, City maintain their perfect start to the season, currently second in the league on goal difference, while United languish in 13th place with four points from 12.
