Lewis Hamilton has shared what happened to his Ferrari after retiring from the Spanish Grand Prix, reports BritPanorama.
The British driver started in fourth position but encountered brake issues by lap six, causing him to drop down the grid significantly. Speaking over the team radio, Hamilton expressed his concerns: “I don’t have brakes, guys. I can barely stop the car.” His team advised him to pull into the pits rather than stop on the track, ultimately leading to his retirement from the race.
Explaining the incident further to Sky Sports, Hamilton stated, “I hit the brake, the car started stopping, and then the pedal took a step and, all of a sudden, the car didn’t decelerate as fast as it would normally. That ended up carrying a lot of speed in and then just brushed the barrier. Then, after that, the pedal came back, and it was fine, and then I think a few corners later the pedal went long. I don’t really know where that’s come from.”
Following his retirement, Hamilton now sits 101 points behind championship leader Kimi Antonelli, who secured victory in Spain after capitalizing on a virtual safety car that disrupted pole sitter Lando Norris’s race. Antonelli commented on the challenges of the race, stating, “It was a very difficult race – not straightforward at all, especially trying to manage tyres. I think today it’s good to win, but it doesn’t feel as good because I think Lando today deserved the win, but overall, we take it.”
Norris acknowledged the challenging circumstances presented by the virtual safety car, admitting that luck was not on his side. He reflected, “I gave it a good fight to try to catch up with Max, but it’s difficult to pass, and he didn’t really make any mistakes. A tough race, one that just got away from us. I felt like we deserved it today, but that’s racing sometimes. We’ll take it on the chin and try again next time.”
With Formula 1 now taking a brief pause, the teams will regroup before heading to Baku in Azerbaijan for the next Grand Prix, where the battle for supremacy continues.
