New vote on Scottish independence suggested by Andy Burnham

Andy Burnham has indicated a new vote on Scottish independence could happen if there is public support for a breakaway, reports BritPanorama.

The Prime Minister had previously told the country’s First Minister, John Swinney, that a second referendum was “off limits.” However, Burnham suggested that clear public support could trigger a vote, similar to how a border poll might be conducted in Northern Ireland.

His comments were in response to Scottish National Party MP Chris Law, who highlighted that the Good Friday Agreement allows for a poll to occur when there is a clear consensus for a vote. The Prime Minister echoed this, stating: “I would say exactly the same situation in Scotland.” He added, “I am not aware that there is a majority of public support for another referendum and until that changes there won’t be one.”

Despite these statements, Swinney countered that Burnham’s position signifies an acceptance of Scotland’s right to choose its own future, asserting, “For the first time since 2014, a British Prime Minister accepts that majority support for a referendum should mean one takes place.”

Downing Street, however, maintained that there had been no change in the Prime Minister’s stance. Burnham’s press secretary reiterated, “The PM’s been repeatedly clear on this.”

This exchange underscores the ongoing debate regarding Scotland’s independence and the terms under which a second referendum might be considered.

The dynamics of independence discussions remain complex and subject to the evolving opinions of the electorate.
