Eugenio Chacarra faces conduct warning from DP World Tour
Eugenio Chacarra, a leading contender for Luke Donald’s 2027 European Ryder Cup squad, is under scrutiny from the DP World Tour following a confrontation with his former caddie at the Omega European Masters, reports BritPanorama.
The incident occurred at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club in Switzerland, where the 26-year-old Spaniard clashed with Adolfo Juan Luna, who previously caddied for him but is now on the bag for fellow countryman Angel Ayora.
The altercation erupted on the practice putting green after the final round, prompting security officials and local police to separate the individuals involved. Video footage appears to show Chacarra asserting that he had been struck during the incident.
In a statement, a DP World Tour spokesperson confirmed that they were aware of the incident, noting, “The confrontation involved a player, a caddie and associates of both parties but the incident was quickly dispersed by tournament officials and security personnel.” Both Chacarra and Luna are expected to be interviewed by tour officials about their conduct moving forward.
The underlying tensions reportedly date back to a financial dispute after Chacarra’s victory at LIV Golf Bangkok in October 2022, during which Luna worked for him. The disagreement contributed to their professional split, which sources indicate occurred on acrimonious terms.
Chacarra’s 2025 campaign has been notable; after falling outside the world’s top 500 following the expiry of his LIV Golf contract, he secured significant victories, including the Hero Indian Open and successive wins at the KLM Open and Italian Open. He now ranks third in the Race to Dubai and has secured a PGA Tour card for 2027.
Donald had considered Chacarra for the Ryder Cup team at Bethpage Black last year, although he ultimately opted for other players. The recent incident raises questions about how this may impact his candidacy for the upcoming event at Adare Manor.
Both Chacarra and Luna are participating in this week’s Amgen Irish Open at Trump Doonbeg, although precautions have been taken to avoid further confrontations, as they have been placed on opposite sides of the draw for the initial rounds.
With prominent golfers like Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, and Tyrrell Hatton in the field, the Irish Open promises a competitive atmosphere, underscored by Chacarra’s evolving narrative, a compelling reminder of the intricate dynamics entwined within professional golf.
