Kimi Raikkonen’s son signs with Red Bull
Former F1 champion Kimi Raikkonen’s son, Robin, has signed for Red Bull. The 11-year-old, who is nicknamed “Ace”, has impressed in karting championships and joins Red Bull’s driver development programme in 2027, reports BritPanorama.
The programme has produced several marquee drivers over the years, including Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel. Robin will be aiming to follow in his father’s footsteps, who won the world championship in 2007 with Ferrari.
Kimi Raikkonen experienced significant success during his F1 career, winning 21 grand prix and standing on the podium 103 times. Commenting on his son’s signing, the former world champion expressed excitement, stating: “We are all thrilled and excited that Robin has been chosen to further his racing path as a member of the Red Bull junior team.”
Raikkonen further elaborated on the support received from Red Bull, saying, “Laurent [Mekies, Red Bull’s Team Principal,] and everyone else at Red Bull have been incredibly supportive throughout all our discussions. They offer a compelling and comprehensive programme to develop and nurture Robin’s progress over the coming years, providing him with all the experience required to develop his natural talent, which has amply been displayed in all his karting endeavours to date.”
Mekies praised Robin’s capabilities, noting he “demonstrated exceptional ability in karting.” He mentioned, “His speed, racecraft and natural talent have established him as one of the most promising young drivers in his age group. At the same time, he impresses with his maturity, his calm approach and his clear focus on driving.”
He added, “Our goal is to develop him step by step, without placing any unnecessary pressure on his shoulders. The path through motorsport is a long one, and we will give him the time, support and resources he needs to maximise his potential.” Mekies underscored their commitment to providing an environment conducive to Robin’s development as he embarks on his racing career.
The news comes ahead of this weekend as Red Bull opts to stay with Liam Lawson in their second seat for the Spanish Grand Prix, with Lawson replacing Isack Hadjar, who is sidelined due to a wrist injury.
