Erling Haaland shines as Manchester City defeat Porto 2-0
Erling Haaland struck twice as Manchester City dispatched Porto 2-0 at the Estadio do Dragao in their Champions League curtain-raiser on Tuesday evening, reports BritPanorama.
The Norwegian forward nodded Enzo Fernandez’s delivery into the net via the far post early in the second half before sliding home a late second in stoppage time. His brace took his Champions League tally for City to 36 goals in just 40 outings.
The double also carried personal significance, propelling Haaland past Tommy Johnson’s total of 166 goals to climb to third on City’s all-time scoring charts — a remarkable feat given he has been at the club for little more than four years.
City controlled the match throughout in Portugal, with Porto’s goalkeeper Diogo Costa standing out before the interval by making a series of exceptional saves. He thwarted Haaland twice with sharp reflex stops and also denied efforts from Antoine Semenyo and Phil Foden.
Despite entering the match after six consecutive domestic victories, Porto failed to register a single attempt on goal during the first half. Tempers rose as the half drew to a close, following a tackle from Marc Guehi on Gabri Veiga, leading to a confrontation between players and coaching staff as they made their way to the dressing rooms.
City resumed with renewed vigour and quickly broke the deadlock. Rayan Cherki played a key role in sustaining a promising move, ultimately feeding the ball to Fernandez, who delivered a hanging cross towards the back post. Haaland directed his header back across Costa and in off the woodwork to give the visitors a deserved advantage.
Porto enjoyed a brief spell of pressure immediately after conceding, with a deflected effort narrowly veering wide. However, they never genuinely threatened an equaliser, and Haaland cemented the win in added time, sliding a low finish past Costa following a cross from substitute Rayan Ait Nouri.
City’s victory was particularly poignant for fans, who recalled their 2021 Champions League final defeat to Chelsea at the same ground. Under Pep Guardiola, the club’s European performances had suffered significantly, with six defeats in their last nine away fixtures in the competition.
Enzo Maresca’s tenure as manager has begun positively, with this victory extending an impressive start to four wins from four across all competitions. Teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi, in his first start for City, accompanied Fernandez effectively in midfield.
