Moses Itauma suffers shock defeat in IBF heavyweight title bout
The scorecards from Saturday evening’s IBF heavyweight title contest at the O2 Arena make for painful reading for Moses Itauma and his supporters. The 21-year-old Chatham fighter held a comprehensive advantage on every judge’s card heading into the fateful ninth round, reports BritPanorama.
Two of the three officials had Itauma ahead 80-71, whilst the third scored it 79-72, crediting him with every round bar the seventh. A second-round knockdown of Filip Hrgovic had further padded Itauma’s margin, delivering a 10-8 round on the cards. Yet, none of it mattered. Referee Howard Foster waved off the contest in the ninth, handing the Croatian a stunning come-from-behind victory and inflicting a first professional defeat on the previously unbeaten British prospect.
The roots of Itauma’s downfall lay in the closing moments of the eighth round. Desperate to secure a knockout against an opponent who had already proved remarkably durable, the southpaw unleashed a furious barrage of punches—more than in any other round of the bout. It was a gamble that backfired catastrophically; having emptied his reserves in that relentless pursuit of a stoppage, Itauma had nothing left when the ninth began.
Hrgovic, considerably fresher and sensing his moment, seized the initiative and turned the tide with devastating effect. The young Briton dropped to his knees as Foster intervened with just 33 seconds remaining on the clock. It was a remarkable reversal of fortune, and the vacant IBF heavyweight belt was heading to Croatia rather than Chatham.
Itauma was helped onto a stretcher and transported to hospital following the devastating conclusion to the contest. His promoter, Frank Warren, subsequently shed light on the fighter’s condition. “Moses has gone to hospital. He has done something to his leg,” Warren told talkSPORT’s Spencer Oliver. “He did something to his leg, and he was exhausted, is the truth of it.”
Warren acknowledged the brutal realities of competing at the highest level. “It was a very fast-paced fight… He got caught, and the fighting instinct was to stand there and let his shots go,” he explained. “He left himself open. That’s what it is at the top level. You have to tick all the boxes.” Warren added that his fighter must take lessons from the experience. “He has got to learn from the fight and will hopefully do that.”
Itauma was released from hospital that same evening, sparing his camp further anxiety. He has since posted on social media, pledging to return stronger than ever. At just 21, time remains firmly on his side, and there is no expectation that he will be rushed back into action.
Nevertheless, serious questions linger over his preparation for a twelve-round championship affair. The Slovakia-born fighter had never previously been taken beyond six rounds as a professional, and he admitted before Saturday’s bout that he had not even completed twelve rounds of sparring. His conditioning plainly fell short of what a world title tilt demands, and as the BBC noted, responsibility for that shortcoming cannot rest with the fighter alone — it must also be shared by the experienced team charged with readying him.
In the ring, where victories are often won in moments of sheer will, Itauma’s experience is a stark reminder of the narrow margins that define success and failure at the elite level. A lesson learned the hard way, it remains to be seen how this setback will shape the young contender’s career.
