Sword attack at Swedish school leaves one dead, two injured
An 18-year-old with a sword attacked a school Friday in central Sweden, killing one person and seriously injuring two others, reports BritPanorama.
Police Chief Tommy Alriksson confirmed that the attacker, a student at the Brinell School in Fagersta, had been apprehended. Shots were fired during the arrest, according to the TT news agency. The deceased was found as police entered the school to secure the premises.
The incident occurred while classes were in session, with approximately 400 to 500 students present. There is no immediate information regarding the attacker’s motive or background.
Alriksson noted, “We have no reason at this time to believe that there are multiple perpetrators,” emphasizing that the investigation is ongoing. Police spokesperson Pelle Vamstad indicated that an alarm was raised in the early afternoon, prompting a rapid police response. Authorities plan to review any available camera footage as part of their inquiry.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed his sorrow over the violence, stating, “We do not yet know what lies behind the act, but we know that the police are working very intensively.” He extended condolences to those affected by the incident.
In response to the attack, the Fagersta city government established a crisis center in a sports hall near the school. The Vastmanland county authorities reported that “many people” were impacted, with police, fire services, and healthcare workers providing assistance. Several nearby schools were placed on lockdown following the events, and roadblocks were implemented to facilitate police operations.
