Farming minister faints during cold storage visit
The UK’s new farming minister, Stephen Morgan, fainted while visiting a refrigerated storage unit filled with beef at a food processing plant in the Lake District. This incident occurred during a tour of farms and suppliers, part of his duties since taking office, reports BritPanorama.
During the visit, Morgan experienced discomfort upon entering the cold storage area, which was stocked with large quantities of meat from slaughtered cattle. According to accounts from a local farmer, Morgan had been shown various cuts of beef before expressing that he felt faint.
The farmer recounted, “He said something like, ‘I don’t feel too well — I need a moment.’” While some may find the situation humorous, the farmer commented on the optics, noting, “It’s not a great look for the farming minister to faint at the sight of meat.”
Addressing the incident, Morgan attributed his discomfort to the sudden change from high temperatures to the cold storage conditions. He stated, “I felt unwell moving between the extreme heat and cold storage, and I’m grateful to all the staff at Lake District Farmers. Hats off to the brilliant people working in these conditions and temperatures to keep the nation fed.”
This visit comes as Prime Minister Andy Burnham seeks to restore trust with farmers, following protests led by figures in the industry over issues such as inheritance tax laws under his predecessor. In response to rising concerns about food prices linked to extreme weather conditions, Burnham recently announced a £65 million funding package aimed at supporting the agricultural sector.
The National Farmers’ Union has welcomed this funding but cautions that it does not address the immediate challenges currently faced by farmers.
As the government grapples with agricultural stability amid climate-change-induced pressures, maintaining the dialogue with the farming community remains critical for future policies.
