Emery praises Villa’s youngsters despite Super Cup defeat to PSG
Unai Emery has provided an honest assessment of Aston Villa’s young talents following their Super Cup loss to PSG, where the team narrowly succumbed to a 2-1 defeat. Despite facing the European Champions with a makeshift squad, Villa’s performance displayed resilience, reports BritPanorama.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia put PSG ahead before 17-year-old Brian Madjo levelled the score for Villa, showcasing his potential. However, the winning goal came from Desire Doue, securing PSG’s place as the third club to retain the Super Cup, following in the footsteps of AC Milan (1990) and Real Madrid (2017).
Emery commended the efforts of Madjo and his fellow youngsters who stepped up in such a high-stakes match. “Their experiences and having days like today are very important,” he remarked. “Brian played today because in pre-season he has shown his capacity to work. The reality is to keep being consistent and performing at the level they showed today.”
The Villa manager was without key players including Ollie Watkins, Emi Martinez, and Ezri Konsa, who had been given additional rest following the World Cup. “We played one match today to compete for a trophy, and we decided to play this match with the players who were ready to play,” he explained. Emery further noted the importance of managing player fitness over the course of the season, drawing on his experience to avoid potential injuries.
Emery expressed satisfaction with how the team tactically approached the game, asserting they “looked PSG in the eyes.” He added, “I wanted this trophy, but I needed to prepare the match under the circumstances. I am proud of the players, but it’s not a win. We were playing for a trophy.”
PSG’s manager, Luis Enrique, acknowledged Villa’s challenge and praised his team’s ability to persevere. “We knew it would be a tough game. But we were able to play as we did because my players showed just what they are made of. It was a demonstration of our DNA,” he stated, emphasizing the role of their supporters in securing victory.
