Voters heading to the polls this week in Nigel Farage’s by-election in Clacton will have a record number of candidates to choose from – but will not be able to vote for most major parties, reports BritPanorama.
The Reform UK leader announced he was quitting as an MP amid questions regarding his personal finances. Shortly thereafter, the Labour Party, the Tories, Liberal Democrats, Greens, and Restore Britain confirmed they would not field candidates in the by-election, leaving independent candidates and Count Binface to contest the vote.
Farage is currently under investigation by the Commons standards watchdog for an undeclared £5 million gift from Reform donor Christopher Harborne prior to his parliamentary tenure. Additionally, there are reports of a probe regarding security arrangements funded by convicted fraudster George Cottrell.
Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, has urged the government to halt Farage’s resignation until the investigation concludes. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch remarked that they will not be standing a candidate in what she referred to as the “fake by-election” intended to distract from ongoing inquiries. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper stated that the Clacton by-election “shouldn’t be happening,” labelling it as Farage’s “political tantrum.”
When is the by-election?
The by-election is scheduled for Thursday, 13 August, with results anticipated in the early hours of Friday morning. Reform initially sought for the vote to occur on 6 August, but Tendring District Council announced a delay of one week.
Acting returning officer Ian Davidson noted, “The electoral timetable is set out by law, and we are bound by these dates.” Davidson emphasized the importance of voter registration, encouraging residents to ensure they are registered ahead of the by-election.

The satirical Count Binface, created by comedian Jonathan David Harvey, is among the independent candidates. Binface has contested previous elections, including against former Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
Strong commentary from Binface on social media includes a call for other parties to withdraw in Clacton, positioning himself as a unity candidate.
Laurence Fox
Laurence Fox, who established the Reclaim Party, declared his candidacy to challenge the status quo in Clacton, citing a mission to combat what he describes as “woke orthodoxy.”

John Stevens is running for the Rejoin EU Party, which aims to advocate for reversing Brexit, a topic garnering considerable debate among constituents.
Monster Raving Loony Party
This long-established satirical party will contest the by-election with three candidates promising whimsical policies, such as banning intergalactic interference.
Piers Corbyn
Piers Corbyn has announced his candidacy, framing the by-election as an opportunity to raise significant issues impacting the nation.
Multiple independent candidates, including Adham Alkhatip of the Forward Party and candidates representing various local and national interests, will also participate. Their platforms predominantly focus on local issues, promoting economic growth, public safety, and infrastructure improvements.
