Farage’s confidence in police amid reopened investigation
Nigel Farage has expressed continued confidence in the police despite acknowledging that counter-terrorism officers have “made some mistakes” following the reopening of a probe into an alleged firebomb attack at his house in south London, reports BritPanorama.
The leader of Reform UK claimed that his party “had been treated very differently to everybody else” leading up to the recent death of former MP Ann Widdecombe.
Farage argued that both the Metropolitan Police and Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) referring themselves to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) reflects that “counter-terrorism made some mistakes” concerning his safety.
The CTP is re-examining a year-old incident involving a “lit incendiary device” reportedly posted through Farage’s letterbox in April 2025, following the investigation into Widdecombe’s death.
Initially classified as an “attempted burglary,” the case was closed without any arrests but has since been reopened amid new information. The IOPC is now investigating the conduct of a CTP London staff member in relation to the case.
Regarding this renewed scrutiny, Farage stated, “Clearly, counter-terrorism made some mistakes, which is why they referred themselves to the Independent Office of Police (Conduct).” He emphasized that he cannot provide further details at this time.
He added, “It’s a great, great tragedy that it took the death of Ann for the security services in Britain to finally take seriously the safety and security of Reform politicians and Reform prominent figures.”
Farage confirmed his ongoing trust in the police, saying, “Do I have confidence now? Yes,” noting that the self-referral indicates a commitment to accountability. “But the fact they’ve done that shows you they’re not trying to cover up, they’re not trying to ignore,” he remarked.
In light of these developments, the relationship between political safety and police accountability appears under renewed scrutiny, as the investigation progresses.
