Rory McIlroy set to return to competitive golf after break
Rory McIlroy is preparing to end his break with wife Erica Stoll and return to competitive golf as he targets a record-extending fourth FedExCup title, reports BritPanorama.
The 37-year-old has not played since The Open at Royal Birkdale last month, instead enjoying time away from the course with Stoll and their five-year-old daughter Poppy. However, McIlroy has now committed to playing the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis, where the PGA Tour Playoffs begin on August 13.
This return marks a significant moment for the Northern Irishman, as he is already the most successful player in FedExCup history, having won the season-long competition three times in 2016, 2019, and 2022. Only Tiger Woods has lifted the trophy more than once, with Woods winning it in 2007 and again in 2009. McIlroy now has the opportunity to become the first four-time champion.
Initially, McIlroy’s participation in Memphis was uncertain after he questioned the necessity of competing in both of the opening two Playoff tournaments. However, he has confirmed his involvement and will return sitting 12th in the FedExCup standings, positioning him favorably to reach the TOUR Championship. This season, McIlroy has taken a more selective approach to his schedule, making Memphis only his 12th start of the year.
The upcoming Playoffs represent the final edition under the existing format, with further changes anticipated for future seasons. The most recent tournament will involve the top 70 players qualifying for the FedEx St. Jude Championship, which will then narrow down to 50 for the BMW Championship at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, and ultimately only 30 players will advance to the TOUR Championship at East Lake, where a $10 million prize awaits the champion.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and defending FedExCup champion Tommy Fleetwood will be among McIlroy’s biggest challengers in Memphis. Additionally, Shane Lowry faces a pivotal week, sitting 60th in the standings and aiming for a top 50 finish to qualify for the BMW Championship, having implications for next season’s lucrative Signature Events.
As the tournament approaches, much of the spotlight will undoubtedly focus on McIlroy as he transitions from family time back to the pursuit of PGA Tour history.
