15 elephants die in suspected cyanide poisoning in Kenya
Last month, the Kenya Wildlife Service announced that 15 elephants had died in the Amboseli ecosystem in a span of a month, reports BritPanorama.
The head of veterinary services at Kenya’s wildlife agency, Dr. Isaac Lekolool, stated that the elephants exhibited signs of “paralysis and difficulty breathing” prior to their deaths. Preliminary laboratory tests detected cyanide poisoning, although further investigations are underway to ascertain the concentration levels.
In addition to cyanide, Lekolool noted that tomatoes were found in the elephants’ stomachs, and he urged caution regarding pesticide use on local farms. “We are yet to find out where this cyanide came from,” he added, highlighting the presence of other crops such as watermelons.
The Kimana region, which borders Amboseli, is known for its agricultural production, including tomatoes and onions that are shipped to Nairobi. The ongoing sampling and analysis of blood from the deceased elephants are part of a thorough investigation into the chemical exposure.
As reported, farms have increasingly encroached upon park boundaries, contributing to a rise in human-elephant conflicts, which remain a significant threat to both wildlife and local communities. Between 2000 and 2020, at least 1,160 elephants were lost in incidents related to self-defense or retaliatory actions, according to Kenya’s National Elephant Plan.
However, Duncan Juma, communications director for Kenya’s wildlife service, dismissed the notion that human-wildlife conflict contributed to these deaths, asserting that “the community loves these animals.”
The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) responded to the suspected poisoning, emphasizing the urgent necessity to address the root causes of human-wildlife conflict. “As people and elephants increasingly share space, protecting wildlife and safeguarding communities’ livelihoods must go hand-in-hand,” they stated.
If the investigation confirms cyanide exposure, IFAW’s East Africa Director Ben Wandago called for a thorough inquiry and the implementation of coexistence strategies. He indicated that this incident raises critical concerns regarding the management of hazardous substances that could contaminate natural habitats.
Despite the investigations, local farmers expressed skepticism about the presence of cyanide stemming from typical agricultural practices.
The tragic loss of these elephants reflects ongoing environmental challenges in the region, underscoring the complex interplay between wildlife protection and agricultural development. There remains much to consider as authorities unravel the circumstances surrounding this incident.
