Martin O’Neill admitted to hospital after procedure
Martin O’Neill has been admitted to hospital after undergoing a “small procedure”, reports BritPanorama.
The Celtic manager is expected to be released within the “next day or two”, as confirmed by the club on its social media platforms. O’Neill, aged 74, has guided Celtic to a domestic double last season after taking over the reins mid-season.
In its statement, the club said, “In response to speculation, we can confirm that Martin O’Neill has undergone a small procedure in hospital. We would envisage Martin being released from hospital in the next day or two, and on behalf of Martin, we would like to thank supporters for their kind wishes.” The club also requested that the privacy of O’Neill and his family be respected during this time.
While he initially joined Celtic on a temporary basis, O’Neill made the decision to stay after securing his eighth and ninth major honours with the team. He recently signed a one-year contract, which includes the option for an additional 12 months, following discussions with Celtic’s major shareholder, Dermot Desmond.
Despite suggesting that Celtic could be “looking at somebody younger” after lifting the Scottish Cup at Hampden Park in June, O’Neill has remained committed to his role. Players have expressed admiration for O’Neill, with James Forrest noting the “aura” he brings to the club. Forrest remarked, “When he came in, obviously, we were going through a tough time, and I think you’ve seen that he was just so good with every player.”
As Celtic prepares for upcoming fixtures, including a League Cup match against Dundee United, the focus remains on their campaign following a successful start to the league season against Dundee.
