Green Party leader faces backlash after sharing contentious image
Zack Polanski has refused to apologise to Nigel Farage after reposting an image featuring an activist in a T-shirt that calls for the Reform leader’s decapitation, reports BritPanorama.
Farage has condemned the Green Party leader’s actions, stating that he must “face consequences” for his “appalling decisions.” The image, posted on Monday, depicted a man wearing a black shirt emblazoned with a guillotine and the phrase, “we’re only making plans for Nigel.”
Although Polanski later deleted the post upon realizing its implications, he asserted that he does not endorse such messages. During an appearance on BBC Newsnight, he described the incident as an “inadvertent mistake,” insisting that had it been intentional, he would have issued an apology.
When pressed to apologise multiple times, Polanski suggested that any such request from Farage was fundamentally dishonest, as Farage cropped the image to misrepresent Polanski’s involvement. He reiterated his stance, stating, “It is important that he’s kept safe, it is important we condemn political violence, but I also recognise this as the political attack that it is.”
Farage has taken further steps by reporting Polanski to the Metropolitan Police, claiming the action constitutes incitement to murder. Polanski responded that it would be “odd” for police to reach out regarding a mistake he insists was unintentional. In a written piece, Farage criticized the lack of immediate repercussions surrounding the incident, including the murder of Ann Widdecombe, voicing concern over political violence and the lack of accountability for those involved.
Polanski’s handling of the matter has drawn ire from members of the Reform Party. Zia Yusuf, a fellow Reform member, labelled the incident as *incitement to murder*, which should warrant police action. Robert Jenrick, another party member, condemned the act as hypocritical for someone who promotes kindness.
The T-shirt design has since been removed from sale by the creators, who claimed the message was intended as satire. A spokesperson for the Green Party noted that Polanski had accepted a collaborative posting request and deleted the image once aware of its nature, emphasizing his non-support for harmful messages. The Metropolitan Police confirmed they are investigating the report related to the shared image.
As of last week, a suspect has been charged with murder in connection to Widdecombe’s death, further highlighting the ongoing concerns regarding political violence in the UK. Reports indicate that Farage receives an average of 300 threats each month, underscoring the rising tensions surrounding political figures.
