European military forces join Bastille Day parade in support of Ukraine

Ukrainian fighter pilots and troops prominently participated in France’s national Bastille Day celebrations, showcasing support for Ukraine while demonstrating Europe’s military solidarity. The massive parade emphasized unity among European nations amid rising tensions with Russia, reports BritPanorama.

On President Emmanuel Macron’s final Bastille Day as president, he hosted nearly 30 other leaders in an event signaling a strong response to threats posed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and former President Donald Trump. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy received an ovation upon arrival, while the Ukrainian troops garnered the biggest applause from crowds along the Champs-Elysees avenue. Emotional exchanges were noted as Zelenskyy and Macron shared hugs at the conclusion of the parade.

This year’s celebrations coincided with daunting challenges, including rampant forest fires and a severe heatwave that necessitated the cancellation of traditional fireworks and firefighters’ balls, which are typically part of the festivities.

Key highlights from this year’s Bastille Day include a historical participation of Ukrainian forces, which underscores the changing dynamics of European military collaboration amidst ongoing geopolitical conflicts.

It commemorates the start of the French Revolution

July 14 marks the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille fortress in 1789, a significant event that ignited the French Revolution, ultimately leading to the overthrow of the monarchy.

The Bastille Day holiday holds a central place in French identity, serving as an occasion for national pride, celebrations, and a showcase of military achievements. The ceremonial parade, traditionally held beneath the Arc de Triomphe, inspired former President Trump to mimic such festivities during his time in office.

This year, a sprawling French tricolor flag fluttered beneath the monumental arch as military bands marched down the grand avenue. While spectators braved the heat with hats and fans, a formation of air force planes flew overhead, leaving trails of smoke in the national colors.

Ukraine is a special guest

Zelenskyy joined Macron in a specially designated area among the assembled leaders. Ukrainian troops not only marched on the avenue, but co-pilots trained in France flew alongside French pilots in Mirage 2000B fighter jets during the parade.

“I feel very proud for the fact that they’re here and for the fact that we’re marching alongside of them and I think it as well it will create better ties with them and NATO and to be a part of that history,” stated U.K. soldier Lance Cpl. Patrick Risso regarding the Ukrainian involvement.

Troops from around Europe are marching

The parade featured approximately 500 troops from countries involved in the “coalition of the willing,” which have pledged support for Ukraine’s security post-conflict. Macron emphasized the significance of unity by welcoming these allies as demonstrations of military awakening and strategic cooperation.

This year’s parade broke with tradition as multiple foreign nationalities participated, marking the first time British troops took part in nearly two decades. The loudest cheers during the event were reserved for the Ukrainian forces.

In the air, military aircraft from several European nations, including Germany, the United Kingdom, and Italy, participated in the flyover. The number of marching troops reached a record of 7,600, surpassing previous years, illustrating the growing scale of the national celebration.

The heat is disrupting the holiday

Simultaneously, rampant forest fires in regions surrounding Paris highlighted the realities France faces amid its third heatwave of the year. Consequently, authorities imposed bans on fireworks and events traditionally tied to Bastille Day celebrations in various locales, including the capital.

Despite these constraints, the Eiffel Tower’s fireworks and drone display remained scheduled, reflecting a resilient spirit as the nation celebrated this historic day amidst unfavourable conditions.
