Conor McGregor announces UFC comeback, motivated by family
Conor McGregor has confirmed that his highly anticipated UFC return is primarily driven by a wish to demonstrate his resilience to his four children, reports BritPanorama.
The Irish fighter is set to re-enter the Octagon for the first time in five years, facing Max Holloway in a significant rematch at UFC 329 in Las Vegas early on Sunday morning.
McGregor’s last fight took place in July 2021, when he sustained a severe leg injury during a trilogy match against Dustin Poirier. Since then, he has vowed to orchestrate the “greatest comeback of all time,” and he now regards fulfilling this promise as a deeply personal endeavor.
Speaking about the motivation behind his return, McGregor stated, “100 per cent, [it’s for my kids]. It’s critical, it’s crucial for me to do it [for them]. I must do it.” The former two-weight UFC champion has highlighted the importance of his children with partner Dee Devlin, viewing them as a vital source of inspiration during challenging times.
McGregor’s focus has been on rehabilitating his severely injured leg, which jeopardized his fighting career. Initially, he was scheduled to compete against Michael Chandler two years ago but had to withdraw after suffering a toe injury during training.
This decision drew criticism from segments of the sporting community, particularly as McGregor had previously fought despite being injured. Nevertheless, he emphasizes that choosing to withdraw was necessary to mitigate risks after an extensive recovery process, stating, “There’s too much at stake. So I dialled it back.”
Despite the setbacks, McGregor maintains he remains confident, asserting he was operating at a high level before the forced withdrawal. “I was right there, sharp as ever. And I still am. I’m very sharp, the sharpest I’ve ever been,” he said.
As the Octagon awaits his return, McGregor’s journey underscores a fighter’s relentless spirit, underscored by the motivational role his family plays. Whether this comeback will meet expectations remains to be seen, but it serves as a significant chapter in McGregor’s storied career.
