Senior AccuWeather meteorologist Chad Merrill warned that Florida’s typical afternoon thunderstorms are expected to develop before kick-off and may move inland later in the day. He noted, “Right now we’ve got in Florida a sea breeze type of setup where you get these afternoon showers and thunderstorms that come off the Atlantic.”
Thunderstorms in the region typically occur in the afternoon, according to Merrill, and while the rainfall may subside, the risk of lingering lightning continues. The current forecast suggests thunderstorms will likely begin around midday and persist into the early afternoon, potentially causing disruptions even if conditions appear clear at game time.
If lightning strikes within the stipulated radius, the match must be suspended for a minimum of 30 minutes, a protocol that has already caused delays in earlier matches during this tournament. England’s previous match against Mexico was also delayed by about an hour due to nearby lightning activity.
Despite these challenges, both teams enter the quarter-final with strong performances in the tournament, as England has won four of its five World Cup games, and Norway has matched that record, defeating Brazil 2-1 in their last match to reach the quarter-finals.
