Lando Norris acknowledges McLaren’s development struggles

Lando Norris has candidly admitted that McLaren find themselves significantly behind their Formula 1 competitors when it comes to car development, reports BritPanorama.

The reigning two-time Constructors’ Champions are currently estimated to be two to three months adrift of where they need to be, a substantial gap in a fiercely competitive environment. They sit 143 points behind Mercedes in the championship standings, having struggled to keep pace as the Silver Arrows have claimed victory in seven of the opening eight races this season.

Norris highlighted the challenges of the new regulations era, stating that a single upgrade is not sufficient for a team so far behind. “We need three, four, five, but it depends,” he explained. “Sometimes you take one little piece at a time, sometimes you try and make something so everything goes together because it’s a new philosophy.”

Currently occupying fifth place in the Drivers’ Championship, Norris believes that recovering competitiveness will take considerable effort. “I don’t think we’re going to be quickest anytime soon but hopefully over the next three, four, five months we can catch up and we can narrow the gap to be on pace with them,” he remarked.

Team principal Andrea Stella has been equally straightforward about the situation, acknowledging a pace deficit of around three to four tenths of a second per lap compared to the frontrunners. “We tend to see pretty much the same pattern across different tracks. So it’s a very consistent picture, and we know exactly what we have to do. We have to upgrade the MCL40,” he stated. Stella mused that if Mercedes does not further develop their car, the lead could conceivably shift to another competitor later in the season.

The British Grand Prix at Silverstone is next on the calendar, and with the Sprint format returning, the pressure will be on McLaren to demonstrate any signs of recovery on home turf.
