Maja Chwalinska’s unfortunate slip ends Wimbledon campaign

Maja Chwalinska’s Wimbledon campaign came to a devastating end when the Polish star slipped at the baseline while standing just one point away from victory, reports BritPanorama.

The 24-year-old, who reached the Roland Garros final earlier this month, had been commanding against Thailand’s Mananchaya Sawangkaew, holding a 6-2, 5-2 lead with match point at 40-30. However, the 20th seed lost her footing and immediately injured her right ankle, visibly wincing as she attempted to move.

Despite receiving medical treatment and having the ankle strapped, Chwalinska’s mobility was severely compromised. Sawangkanew capitalised ruthlessly, claiming the second set without conceding another game before completing a remarkable 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 comeback. The French Open finalist expressed her devastation following the agonising defeat.

She said: “I’m definitely very disappointed. I was one point from winning a match. But I’ll get through it. I didn’t want to retire in Wimbledon.”

The wild card entry had arrived at the All England Club with momentum from her breakthrough Grand Slam run, making the manner of her departure all the more painful. Elsewhere, Naomi Osaka made a memorable entrance on Court Three, arriving in an all-white ceremonial dress inspired by traditional Japanese kimono design, featuring intricate embroidery of cranes and cherry blossom.

The four-time Grand Slam champion delivered an impressive performance to dispatch France’s Elsa Jacquemot 6-1, 7-5. The Japanese star dominated the opening set before facing tougher resistance in the second, though she ultimately secured a comfortable passage into the next round.

Jessica Pegula secured a much-needed victory to banish memories of early exits at both last year’s Championships and the recent French Open, overcoming Darja Vidmanova 7-5, 6-3. The world number four said: “I definitely wanted to redeem myself a bit. (A) little extra nerves or pressure today, as well, just with that in mind, but then also motivation at the same time.”

On the men’s side, Cameron Norrie has been knocked out of Wimbledon after losing to Michael Zheng in a thrilling five-set contest. The British No. 1 is the latest big name out of the competition, after Emma Raducanu and Jack Draper both withdrew through injury. The 30-year-old exited the competition after losing 7-6 (9-7), 2-6, 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 7-6 (10-4) in a captivating game, with the American producing some incredible shots.

As the tournament progresses, the unpredictability of sport once again reveals that the fine line between triumph and heartbreak can hinge on a single moment — a reminder of the fragility that characterises elite competition.
