Police shoot family dog mistaken for threat during NBA celebrations
A family dog in Los Angeles was shot dead by police after a neighbour mistook its owner’s excited basketball cheers for screams of distress, reports BritPanorama.
Jameson, a two-year-old mix of golden retriever, St Bernard, and poodle, was killed by LAPD officers outside his home while the family was celebrating the New York Knicks’ victory in the NBA Championship. Video footage captured the dog lying motionless on the ground, dressed in a Knicks jersey, as his devastated owner wept over him.
“Oh my God! Oh my God, I cannot believe this is happening. I cannot believe this is happening,” Marie Marsielle, Jameson’s owner, shouted at officers through her tears. She explained that they had been “f***ing celebrating the Knicks” on Saturday evening when the incident occurred.
Marie was on a FaceTime call with her son, Jeremiah Garcia, while watching the game. He recounted his shock as he rushed upstairs to find yellow tape and his mother in distress. “I spring up the stairs and I see yellow tape on the stairwell. And I see my dog. Then I see my mom in my home just screaming at the top of her lungs,” he told NBCLA.
A total of 14 officers arrived at the scene. Marie later disputed the police’s account, insisting her pet posed no threat. “Jameson wasn’t baring his teeth, he wasn’t growling, he wasn’t aggressive, he wasn’t barking,” she stated, asserting that he was simply moving toward the officer.
The LAPD provided a different narrative, stating that when the resident reopened her door, the dog charged at an officer, leading to the shooting. An inquiry by the Force Investigation Department has been initiated regarding the incident.
In response to the tragedy, an online campaign titled “Justice for Jameson” has begun, with a memorial growing outside the family’s home. Jeremiah created a fundraiser to honour his pet’s memory, which aimed for $10,000 but has since surpassed $124,000 in donations. The neighbour who contacted police expressed regret, acknowledging that while his concern was genuine, he felt guilt over the outcome.
This event highlights the tragic consequences of misunderstandings in high-stress scenarios, leaving a family to grapple with grief against a backdrop of sports celebration.
