Reform MP claims intimidation by Lib Dem following Belfast riots confrontation

Conflict erupts in Parliament over Belfast riots

A reform MP claims she was left feeling “threatened and shaken” after being “accosted” by a Lib Dem over the Belfast riots, reports BritPanorama.

Sarah Pochin alleged that fellow MP Angus MacDonald aggressively accused her of “inciting violence” during a heated exchange in Parliament. This confrontation occurred in the context of escalating tensions among MPs, following an asylum seeker’s charge of attempted murder in a stabbing incident that provoked unrest in Northern Ireland.

The violent aftermath of the incident has left vehicles ablaze across Belfast and forced numerous families to evacuate their homes. Protestors took to the streets, igniting vehicles as a reaction to the alleged attack. Pochin expressed her distress over the encounter, stating, “His aggressive approach and tone left me feeling threatened and shaken.”

She further commented on the differences between the political stances of her party, Reform UK, which advocates for controlled immigration, and the Lib Dems, who she claimed support open borders. “This kind of behaviour is unacceptable, especially from fellow MPs,” she added, defending her party’s positions as serving the interests of the United Kingdom.

In response, MacDonald categorically rejected Pochin’s portrayal of the incident, describing it as a “brief” conversation focused on the implications of her party’s rhetoric on community tensions. “It is acceptable to challenge colleagues in a fair and respectful way when their actions and words risk causing real-world harm,” he stated, indicating that he believed Reform’s message has stirred “hatred and division” in recent times.

The unrest in Belfast follows a horrific stabbing incident that left victim Stephen Ogilvie with severe injuries, including the loss of an eye. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer condemned the riots as “shocking and completely unacceptable,” affirming that those responsible for the violence would face legal consequences.

Hadi Alodid, 30, has been remanded in custody after being charged with attempted murder regarding the stabbing, marking a significant moment in what has become a deeply fraught situation in the region.

As political discourse escalates around contentious issues of immigration and public safety, the implications of these discussions extend beyond Parliament, reverberating throughout communities grappling with the unrest.
