Christian Eriksen collapsed during Denmark’s friendly fixture against Ukraine this evening, marking the second time the 34-year-old midfielder has suffered such an incident while representing his country, reports BritPanorama.
The Danish Football Association has since provided reassurance about his condition. “Christian Eriksen is conscious and doing well under the circumstances,” the federation stated on X. The match has been called off.
The former Tottenham and Manchester United player was transported from the pitch by ambulance following the incident, which occurred in the second half. Officials opted to abandon the match entirely rather than allow play to continue.
Denmark had been leading 2-1 when the game was halted. Broadcast footage captured the moment Eriksen placed his hand against his chest before collapsing on the ground. At that point, cameras cut away from the scene.
Medical personnel rushed onto the pitch immediately to attend to the Danish international, while his teammates gathered in a protective circle around him. Supporters inside the stadium responded by singing chants in support of the stricken player as treatment was administered on the field.
Patrick Dorgu, who plays for Manchester United, had opened the scoring for Denmark, with defender Joakim Maehle adding a second goal. Ukraine’s Viktor Tsygankov reduced the deficit shortly before the interval.
This incident evokes memories of June 2021, when Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s European Championship match against Finland in Copenhagen. Medical staff performed life-saving cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the pitch, after which he was rushed to hospital and stabilized.
Following his recovery, Eriksen was fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator, a specialist device designed to regulate heart rhythm. Despite the severity of that episode, the midfielder made a remarkable return to professional football just eight months later, eventually securing moves to Brentford and subsequently Manchester United.
