George Russell struggles with qualifying performance as Kimi Antonelli takes pole in Monaco

Russell faces challenges as Antonelli secures pole at Monaco Grand Prix qualifying

George Russell encountered a challenging day during the Monaco Grand Prix qualifying, finishing in sixth place while his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli achieved pole position. The Italian teen, with four consecutive race victories under his belt, narrowly outpaced Max Verstappen by just 0.043 seconds to secure the top grid spot, reports BritPanorama.

Russell concluded the session nearly four tenths behind Antonelli and also trailed behind Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, and Charles Leclerc. This outcome leaves the 28-year-old Briton 43 points adrift of Antonelli in the drivers’ championship standings.

The prospect of Sunday’s race looms large for Russell, as overtaking is notoriously difficult on the narrow streets of Monte Carlo. The race could severely impact his title aspirations, particularly given the circuit’s limited passing opportunities which may widen the gap between the Mercedes drivers.

In reflecting on his recent struggles, Russell expressed confusion over his downturn in form following a strong start to the season. “If I knew, I would be able to not be in that position,” he remarked to Sky Sports F1, contemplating how effortless the early rounds felt compared to his current situation.

“The start of the year was just easy. Every lap I did in practice, qualifying, it was P1 – worst case P2 – every single session. Q1, Q2, Q3,” Russell detailed, highlighting a stark contrast to his recent performances. “Last three races it’s just been nowhere,” he added, noting that even securing a pole position in Canada had required extraordinary effort rather than reflecting his true pace.

In discussing the root of his difficulties, Russell attributed some of it to fundamental differences between this year’s W17 car and the 2025 models. “There’s definitely some things we’ve seen that the changes with this year’s car, with my natural driving style doesn’t suit it as last year’s car did,” he shared.

Russell mentioned the contrasting driving styles he and Antonelli possess, indicating that while last year’s setup worked for him, this year’s configuration appears to suit his teammate better. “It still doesn’t answer why the start of the year was such a breeze,” he remarked, showcasing his ongoing struggle to adapt.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff weighed in on Russell’s qualifying performance, suggesting that his challenges stem from a lack of confidence in the car. “Qualifying started on a bad foot,” Wolff noted, explaining how Russell’s difficulties began early in the session. “Once you start to run behind the performance and you lose the confidence, it’s super difficult to catch up again,” he added, speculating that more track time could have aided the situation.

Despite the setbacks, Wolff described Russell as “robust and resilient,” underscoring the potential for recovery as the season progresses.

As the teams prepare for the race, the narrative might shift rapidly in Monaco, reminding fans of the relentless pressure and unpredictability of Formula 1, where even the most talented drivers face unique challenges on any given race day. With fortunes fluctuating, every lap can rewrite the script in this high-stakes sport.
