Andoni Iraola edges closer to Liverpool managerial role
Andoni Iraola is edging closer to becoming Liverpool’s next manager after discussions over personal terms gathered pace, with three rival clubs now set to miss out on the highly-rated Spaniard, reports BritPanorama.
The Reds have moved swiftly following the departure of Premier League-winning boss Arne Slot. They have identified Iraola as their preferred successor, with negotiations progressing between both parties ahead of the Club World Cup later this month.
The 43-year-old has emerged as the standout candidate for the vacancy at Anfield after enhancing his reputation during an impressive spell with Bournemouth. Last season, Iraola guided the Cherries to a sixth-place finish in the Premier League, securing European football and earning widespread praise for his attacking style of play.
Liverpool have already made their opening move and are optimistic about finalising an agreement in the coming days. Sporting director Richard Hughes, who previously worked with Iraola at Bournemouth, is playing a central role in the negotiations. The Reds aim to have their new manager ready before the Club World Cup kicks off on June 11, with talks expected to continue throughout the week.
Should the deal be completed, it would represent a significant blow to several clubs that had explored appointing Iraola following his departure from Bournemouth. However, Liverpool’s interest has positioned them firmly at the front of the queue, with Iraola now focused on reaching an agreement with the Premier League champions. If appointed, he may look to bolster his coaching staff, including a possible reunion with former Bournemouth defender Tommy Elphick.
Away from the managerial search, Liverpool continues to adjust to life after Slot’s departure. Club captain Virgil van Dijk recently paid tribute to Slot on social media, reflecting on their success in winning the Premier League during their first season together. Additionally, defender Ibrahima Konate has confirmed he will leave the club when his contract expires this summer, following over 180 appearances and contributing to multiple domestic trophies.
