Steven Gerrard expresses disappointment over Liverpool’s decision to sack Arne Slot

Steven Gerrard has admitted he is “gutted” by Liverpool’s decision to part company with Arne Slot, despite acknowledging he was not shocked by the club’s move, reports BritPanorama.

Liverpool confirmed Slot’s departure following a challenging season, marking the end of the Dutchman’s tenure just one year after he led the club to its second Premier League title.

The decision has sparked division among fans, with supporters split on whether Slot’s impressive debut season justified retention, or if recent struggles necessitated change. Gerrard clearly voiced his support for Slot.

Speaking to TNT Sports ahead of the Champions League final, the Liverpool legend praised Slot’s achievements at Anfield and expressed his sadness over the club’s choice. “I’m not surprised,” Gerrard remarked. “I’m gutted for Arne Slot because in his first year, he did an incredible job,” he added.

Slot arrived amid high expectations following the departure of Jurgen Klopp in 2024 and managed to exceed those by guiding the Reds to a league title. However, a difficult second season ultimately led the club’s decision-makers to pursue a different direction.

As discussions about potential successors begin, Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has emerged as a prominent candidate. Gerrard believes Iraola possesses the right attributes for the role, noting, “He did a terrific job at Bournemouth, and his style would suit Liverpool.” He cautioned, however, that Liverpool is a highly desirable position that would attract multiple elite managers.

The club’s hierarchy released a statement acknowledging the difficulty of their decision, paying tribute to Slot while providing rationale for the change in leadership. They noted, “The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC in the time that he has been with us has been significant, meaningful, and – most importantly of all to supporters and ourselves – successful.”

Despite the accolades and the compassion Slot demonstrated, notably following the passing of Diogo Jota, Liverpool officials ultimately concluded that change was essential for the club’s progress. “At the same time, we have collectively come to the conclusion that change is necessary in order for the club to keep moving forward,” concluded the statement.

Amid speculation regarding the future, the situation stands as a reminder of the precarious nature of football management and the fleeting grace that accompanies success in the unforgiving world of top-tier football.
